We planted these trees

Pacific Sunset Maples line the side of our house and the street. We planted three of them over twelve years ago, when that side of the garden was hot, dry and exposed to the harsh southern elements of sun and wind. Through time, those elements have changed, providing insulation for our home, and gorgeous dappled light to our garden.

I love this time of year, when I get glimpses of their changing colors from inside the house, at unsuspecting times. Like out this window here.

I'm so glad we planted them, and I can't believe how much they've grown and transformed this space.

So here's some advice to new gardeners: plant trees.

You really cannot beat Maples for stunning fall color. I love our little trees we planted a few years ago too (as part of Friends of Trees). What's more, I love seeing the other trees we planted around the neighborhood...there is something so satisfying about the idea that we've done some that will (hopefully) be appreciated by those far in the future as well.

And plant them soon! We keep moving away from trees we have planted, but drive by to check on them from time to time.

Scott, I agree! Ours, too, were planted through Friends of Trees. I love checking in on the other ones in the neighborhood, and seeing how they're doing.

Ricki, you are absolutely correct.
