Of course religion and politics are separate! Right?

Do you know what the top ten abuses of religion in politics during the 2006 campaign season are? The Interfaith Alliance has released the list, and it's impressive. And shocking. I don't understand what part of our founding documents aren't clear about the separation of church and state. The Interfaith Alliance's President, Rev. Welton Gaddy said, "This year has been one of the worst on record for the abuse of religion in politics. We have a lot of work to do before 2008." Yes, yes we do. Read 'em and weep.

I'd love to know which one of these my readers find to be the most egregious. I thought the politican with the ten commandments on the back of his business card to be quite amusing. But then again, I just about spit up when I read this pastor's quote: "Sound an alarm. A Holy Ghost invasion is taking place. Man your battle stations, ready your weapons, lock and load."

Good Gawd. I believe in God but I can't like organized religion or religious zealots. At.All.

Fanatic (def.) A person marked or motivated by extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm. Zealot (def.) A fanatically committed person. Put whatever you want in front of either - sports, religion, politics, whatever - and it spells trouble. For me, the key word in the 1st definition is unreasoning - absence or lack of reasoning, irrational, absurdity, nonsense. And these people are trying to mold our government to their vision?! Illogical!

Count me as one Christian who is adamant that we keep church and state separate. My ancestors, Huguenots and Quakers, came here to escape religious persecution and death; they did not conform to their governments' definition of faith. Let's not travel down roads created in those ignorant, intolerant times.

Besides, I really don't want my faith dragged through the political mud, thank you very much.

#2 was the worst for me. I'm super-defensive of the First Amendment, especially when the church is the aggressor.

Add to your list the lovely website Rapture Ready...I dunno why these people think what other people are doing is their business when THEY aren't even doing what either of the Testaments says they should do. It just cracks me up, though, because my entire life my father has been saying who the anti-Christ is (changes ever 2-3 years) and when the rapture will happen (uh, duh - is says in the Book of Revelation that only the Father knows...grrrr).

and btw, Mr. Wonderful and I were perusing Leviticus. He's a Christian and thought a lot of it was just nuts. He thinks it was written that way because the writers thought they had some authority over the little people or something like that.

Katherine Harris just says shit like that because her plastic surgery went bad and she's trying to divert our attention from her face.

#1 is the most outrageous to me. A pastor's job is to preach the gospel of love and forgiveness and to tend to the needs of his parish. The Bible tells the story of Jesus turning over money changers tables at the temple. I don't seem Him being to keen on the church being used to fundraise for politics.
